Why I Walked Away from a Great Opportunity
It’s not easy to walk away from something that looks good on paper.
Leadership of Marion County is an incredible program. It’s designed to develop leaders, connect changemakers, and make a lasting impact in our community. I was honored to be accepted — and excited to participate.
But a few months into the 8-month program, something didn’t feel right.
The opportunity was great…
But it wasn’t aligned with my number one core value: fatherhood.
We Don’t Get Time Back
I’m a dad to 2-year-old twin girls. And if you’re a parent, you already know — these early years go by in a blink. Soon, they’ll be in school. Then sports, dances, road trips, and the teenage years.
Right now, I still get bedtime stories. Afternoon walks. Helping them learn.
But that window is closing — fast.
As the Leadership program picked up, the time commitments with the program and running a business started to pile up. My calendar filled with events, sessions, and service hours. And no matter how worthy the cause… I started to feel like I was missing what mattered most to me.
So I made the difficult decision to remove myself from the program. Not because it wasn’t a great program — it absolutely is. But because it didn’t fit this season of my life.
I chose to be home, present, and undistracted.
Please don't mistake this as not working. I wake up at 4am and work before they wake up. I'm writing this blog as they nap. But the thing that is MOST important to me during this season of my life is spending as much time as possible interacting and helping my girls learn and grow.
Are You Living Aligned with Your Core Values?
This experience forced me to get brutally honest with myself. I had to ask:
- What do I say I value?
- What does my calendar say I value?
- Are they the same?
Too often, we chase titles, promotions, and opportunities that look great on the outside — while slowly drifting from what we value most on the inside.
That’s why this blog isn’t just about my decision.
It’s about your life too.
Map Out Your Core Values
If you’ve never done a core value exercise, I highly recommend it. It helps you get clear on what truly matters — so you can make decisions that reflect it.
Start here:

Take a few minutes. Choose your top 5 values. Write them down. Then ask yourself:
- Does how I spend my time reflect these values?
- Am I honoring what matters most to me — or just staying busy?
- What needs to change so I can live more aligned?
