A Personal Story on How The Choices We Make Today Shape Our Tomorrow
When I was 13, I lost my grandma to pancreatic cancer. She was just 57 years old when she passed away.
At the time, I didn’t fully understand what had happened—I just knew someone I loved was gone, and way too soon. Looking back now, with a deeper understanding of health and wellness, I can see the patterns and decisions that may have contributed to her early death. And it’s shaped how I view health—not just for myself, but for my family, our community, and every person who walks into CrossFit CTRL.
My grandma wasn’t active. She didn’t prioritize her health. She’d go through the McDonald’s drive-thru 2–3 times a day. It was normal. It was convenient. It was what she was used to. And for a while, it probably felt like it didn’t matter.
But choices compound.
One skipped walk becomes a week of inactivity. One fast food meal becomes a habit. One year of poor sleep and high stress becomes five. And over time, your body keeps score.
“It Won’t Hurt Just This Once” Can Become a Life Pattern
Most people don’t wake up one day and say, “I’m going to destroy my health.” It happens slowly, quietly, and often unintentionally.
It’s the soda with every meal. The extra hours at work with no time left to cook. The exhaustion that pushes workouts to the back burner. The belief that you’ll start “next week” or “after the holidays” or “once things calm down.”
The truth is, we always think we have more time—until we don’t.
The Wake-Up Call
Losing my grandma was one of the biggest wake-up calls of my life. I couldn’t understand it then, but now I do: she didn’t pass away because she was unlucky. She passed away because, for years, her body was overworked, undernourished, and overwhelmed.
Pancreatic cancer is aggressive and unpredictable—but a lifetime of poor nutrition, no movement, and stress gave it fertile ground to grow. It didn’t have to be that way.
And that realization hits me even harder now that I’m a parent. Because I’m not just making choices for myself anymore. I’m modeling habits and creating a legacy for my kids. And I want that legacy to be strong, healthy, and full of life.
What Legacy Are You Leaving?
The choices we make right now—the food we eat, how we move, the stress we manage (or don’t)—all shape our future. Not just in how we look or perform, but in how long we live and the quality of that life.
Do you want to be the grandparent who’s sitting on the sidelines, or the one out playing in the yard?
Do you want to be around to see your kids grow up, graduate, and start families of their own?
It doesn’t take perfection—it takes action.
Small Changes Save Lives
If you’re reading this, you still have time. You have the ability to shift the path you’re on. It starts with one decision—showing up to a workout, cooking one real meal, getting to bed an hour earlier, or saying “no” to the fast food line just once.
And then doing it again tomorrow.
You don’t have to do it alone. That’s exactly why CrossFit CTRL exists—to simplify the process and support you with fitness, nutrition, and recovery all in one place. We help take the guesswork out of it so you can stay focused on what matters: living a long, healthy life for the people you love.
